With the advent of reviving popular movie franchises in Hollywood, it was not surprising that DreamWorks would want to do the same for the “Shrek” series, considering it is one of its top-grossing movies of all time. The good news for fans of the fairy tale parody, “Shrek 5,” is confirmed to be in the pipeline. However, they might have to wait for three years or more before it hits the big screen.
‘Shrek 5’ release date, production: Movie series revival in the making
Talks about the production of “Shrek 5” have been around for years, even though many thought that the fourth movie “Shrek Forever After” in 2010 would be the end of the series. Fast forward to this year, DreamWorks has not yet taken back its previous pronouncements that a fifth movie will be released in the future.
About a year ago, fans were given the latest updates on the “Shrek 5” production. Famed animated movie producer Chris Meledandri confirmed that he was assigned to work on the fifth film. However, it was also reported that he is working on other major animated movie projects, such as a fresh take on the “Super Mario Bros.” It is slated for a 2022 release date and purportedly a priority for his production company Illumination.
Meledandri also has other projects in the coming years, including “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2020) and “Sing 2” (2021). While nothing is certain yet about the “Shrek 5” release date, these details are helpful hints that the movie is very unlikely coming out before 2022.
‘Shrek 5’ plot, cast: Should fans expect the revival movie to feature the same actors?
One thing about very popular movie franchises like “Shrek” is that the fans tend to prefer having the same cast in the event of a revival installment. Much like its release date, nothing much is known about the plot and casting plans for “Shrek 5.”
However, there have been indications that the fifth film might not directly pick up from the events of “Shrek Forever After.” On the bright side, Meledandri hinted at an interview with Variety at also wanting to have the original cast members back for “Shrek 5.” But it is also tricky to predict if there would be no need to recast the roles because, for example, Fiona was voiced by Cameron Diaz, who has retired from her acting career last year.
