The possibility of a “Sherlock” Season 5 still got hardcore fans hoping the crime-solving drama will return even if the chance of it happening is bleak. One of the major reasons why the show is unlikely to return are the schedules of Martin Freeman (John H. Watson) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes).
Freeman and Cumberbatch are heavily involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so their time isn’t flexible at the moment. However, since “Avengers 4” is slated to undergo a lot of changes, with the latest installment concluding the way it did, this may free both actors from their contracts and “Sherlock” Season 5” might be their next project.
What’s more, the real-life owner of the café that is the favorite meeting place of Watson and Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) on the show said he heard rumors that the show is indeed returning. Naturally, this got fans excited again and Twitter lit up with questions," Cinema Blend reported.
But as the rumor finally reached Mark Gatiss, who is also the show’s co-creator, the actor-writer immediately shot it down. When asked via Twitter if “Sherlock” Season 5 is coming back, Gatiss replied, “Utter nonsense,” completely dousing the fire that the rumors caused.
As for Cumberbatch and Freeman's MCU involvement, the two aren’t going to be parting ways with Disney as the former’s contract is set for three more movies while the latter has a couple more. This, once again, shot down any possibilities that “Sherlock” Season 5 will be in production soon.
Mark Gatiss even said that he’s happy how the show ended and is unsure whether or not they’ll revive the crime drama. “Sherlock” Season 5 has long been anticipated by its fans because how brilliantly Cumberbatch and Freeman play their respective roles. Add that to the fact that the supporting cast is equally riveting and one would understand why fans are still hoping for its return.
