“Sherlock” season 5 may not be coming at all, at least this is what the rumors say about the show today. People are starting to think that it is canceled already and there are lots of reasons why this kind of speculations are spreading around.
While many viewers are still patiently waiting for “Sherlock” season 5, the rumors of cancellation are getting stronger because the series’ showrunners, Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat, failed to confirm when it is returning. The executives do not even have an idea when they could begin the production since they are both busy with other works.
Moreover, it was said that “Sherlock” season 5 is not happening because the fourth installment’s finale is believed to have dropped the hint already. The last episode of that season was titled “The Final Problem” and observers speculated that this marked the end of the series.
However, neither Moffat nor Gatiss has said anything about the fourth’s finale being the final episode of the series thus, it cannot be assumed that it was the last. In fact, the showrunners said that they are still open to doing “Sherlock” season 5.
"Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock —we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways,” Moffat told Radio Times. “We haven't got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn't do it again."
Mark Gatiss seconded this statement when in an interview, he said that they had not dismissed the prospect of filming “Sherlock” season 5. He went on to say that the only thing that has been keeping them from going back to the set of “Sherlock” is their schedules and current work.
Finally, Gatiss admitted that it could take a few more years before they can start the production of “Sherlock” season 5. They, including the actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman’s (John H. Watson), must finish all their projects first before embarking on the batch of new episodes for the beloved detective drama.
