Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat may be teaming up once again in the near future but it will not be for “Sherlock” season 5. In a report by Variety, Gatiss and Moffat are currently in talks with the BBC to create a new mini-series focusing on Bram Stoker's “Dracula.”
According to reports, the upcoming series from the “Sherlock” season 5 creators will follow the same feature-length episodic format of the show headlined by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Not many details have been released about the upcoming series, which include speculation on whether the Gatiss-Moffat adaptation will be translated into a modern setting similar to “Sherlock.”
While this may seem like terrible news for fans who are hoping for the creators to focus on “Sherlock” season 5, fans can rest assured that the announcement is not the death of the upcoming installment. Gatiss and Moffat have expressed that while “Sherlock season 5 is in the backburner for now, the duo does have plans to return to the series at a later point in time.
What Moffat and Gatiss's “Dracula” now have in common with “Sherlock” season 5 is the fact that both projects have been announced to be in the creators' current plans yet a confirmation on when they will be officially underway has yet to be set in stone. “Dracula” has yet to undergo its casting and “Sherlock” season 5 has yet to confirm when it will undergo production.
Fans already know that material for “Sherlock” season 5 has been ready for quite some time already but may have encountered a roadblock due to its stars gaining additional fame due to the series. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch have been particularly busy with different ongoing projects, with their involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being the most recent career highlights for the pair.
While “Dracula” may be on the table of discussion for Moffat, Gatiss, and the BBC, there is no official confirmation that the new series will be produced prior to “Sherlock” season 5. Hopefully, fans get to enjoy “Sherlock” season 5 sometime soon before “Dracula” hits the airwaves.
