Another member of the Gallagher family is set to leave the show in “Shameless” Season 9 Episode 6. Cameron Monaghan has portrayed Ian since the first season of the show, but the actor has recently confirmed that the upcoming episode is going to be his last as the third oldest Gallagher sibling.
"The next episode will be my last,” Monaghan said in his farewell post on Instagram. “I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?”
This is a big blow for fans because Ian is actually one of the most interesting characters in the family drama series. The character had to come to terms with his sexuality (he’s gay) while dealing with his bipolar disorder issues early in the series, and he even enlisted himself in the army in Season 3, albeit illegally. But he will be remembered mostly for the controversial “Gay Jesus” plotline introduced in Season 8. The official synopsis for “Shameless” Season 9 Episode 6 didn’t reveal how Ian will be written out of the show, but he will likely be spending a lot of time in jail after what happened in Season 8.
Meanwhile, Monaghan is not the only series regular leaving in Season 9 because Emmy Rossum has already confirmed that she is departing from the show after the current season. Rossum portrays Fiona in “Shameless.” In any case, “Shameless” Season 9 Episode 6 is scheduled to air this Sunday, Oct. 14, at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.
