‘Shameless’ season 7’s episode 5, entitled “Own Your Shit”, will follow Frank learning that a billionaire philanthropist has purchased his homeless shelter. Meanwhile, Ian struggles in his relationship with Trevor.
Episode 5’s synopsis posted on Carter Matt stated, “Frank learns that a billionaire philanthropist has bought the homeless shelter and that he and his clan can stay. Meanwhile, Fiona gets smart financial advice from a Tinder hookup; and Ian struggles with his feelings for Trevor.”
The promo revealed that Frank’s (William H. Macy) homeless shelter will be getting an upgrade thanks to a billionaire philanthropist, who purchases it. As new things are wheeled into the house, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) looks on in surprise that even homeless people can get better stuff than them.
Meanwhile, Fiona will go on a Tinder date for which she will be receiving some money tips. According to Blasting News, this would probably be in her favor as she takes control of her career since she decided to focus more on herself for once. The eldest daughter of the Gallagher clan has been acting as the matriarch for years and put her life on hold in favor of attending to her siblings.
Ian (Cameron Monaghan), on the other hand, will face emotional struggles over his lover Trevor (Elliot Fletcher). It seems that Ian will be having doubts over his relationship.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series returned to its roots by tackling issues of sexuality with the introduction of Trevor in season 7. Trevor is a homeless activist who’s in the neighborhood to help out Frank’s homeless shelter.
Executive producer Nancy Pimental said, “A few years ago, Ian was being confronted with people who were homophobic or weren't accepting of his choices, and now it has become normalized. Suddenly he's on the other side of it now, confronted with this new [trans] situation that he has to learn to accept.”
Pimental continued, “Like people had to digest and process his sexuality in the beginning of the series, now Ian has to educate himself. As progressive as he can be in many ways, he can be limited in his exposure to people outside of his world.”
She noted that Ian isn’t exactly being “experimental” with his sexuality but trying to cope with being comfortable in his new relationships.
Rossum, who directed the preceding episode “I Am A Storm”, recalled, “Introducing Trevor was the most exciting part of the episode. To cast an actor authentically who is trans to play trans, I think that everyone was nervous that the pool of actors to look at would be small. But it wasn't — there were a lot of really great choices. For me, the naturalism and charm and fierceness that comes with who Elliot is and the commitment to the character made him the obvious choice.”
‘Shameless’ season 7’s episode 5, entitled “Own Your Shit”, is scheduled to premiere on Showtime on October 30, 2016.
