Unlike Cameron Monaghan's short-lived departure from the show, Emmy Rossum exit appears to be a permanent one. But fans, even the producers, would love to have Fiona’s presence in some capacity. Here is how that could happen in “Shameless” season 10.
Story-wise, showrunner John Wells confirmed that Fiona does not intend to be estranged from the other Gallagher family members. When asked whether there would be some sort of communication between them in “Shameless” season 10, Wells told Deadline, “Yes. She’s not trying to be lost from them.”
At the moment, it still seems unclear how that is going to happen. Rossum’s actual return on set is quite unlikely at this point. So the next best thing that could happen in “Shameless” season 10 is a phone call between Fiona and the younger Gallaghers. “We’ll talk to Emmy, and see if she wants to do a phone call for us or something,” Wells said.
However, Wells and the fans are most probably hoping for the best that is to have Rossum back even just for a cameo appearance in “Shameless” season 10. But the showrunner admitted that it is not set in stone yet and would completely depend on Rossum’s plans.
Major comebacks in the history of TV is not new. But it might still be too early for Rossum to return and even the actress previously seemed doubtful if she needs to be in “Shameless” season 10 or other future installments. “I would never close my door on the family. … But for me, quite honestly, I’m not sure what more story can be told for her. I really liked the way we ended it,” Rossum told Entertainment Weekly. “But never say never; I really love all the people I work with. There’s so many other things that I want to do but I love my family.”
Rumors of cancellation started to spread soon after Rossum announced she is leaving in season 9. But much to fans’ delight, Showtime made “Shameless” season 10 happen, though a specific release date has yet to be announced.
