The television adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s popular series just went off-script.
On the January 23 episode of “Shadowhunters” Season 2, Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) was killed after a demon was sent loose by Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) in the Institute in an attempt to break into the City of Bones, Hollywood Life recapped. The demon began taking control of the Shadowhunters one by one, starting with Raj (Raymond Ablack), who the broke Lydia’s (Stephanie Bennett) arm. When the demon got hold of Alec (Matthew Daddario), he proceeded to kill Jocelyn.
Fans of “The Mortal Instruments” series are probably livid about the turn of events in the episode, considering that the relationship between Clary (Kate MacNamara) and her mother are a major story arc, and that Jocelyn didn’t die in the books. But the showrunners said even the author approved of the twist, and thought it was a “cool” story device for Clary to move forward to her destined path.
“In order for someone to become a hero, they need to go through adversity, and the death of parents is part of becoming a true adult — a true soul unto yourself. And we felt like that was something that was a really powerful thing that could push her character through 2A in a really compelling manner,” showrunner Todd Slavkin disclosed to TVLine.
Will we expect a stronger, more powerful Clary? Slavkin believes so, as she comes to terms with her mother’s death. As for the dynamics between Clary, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Simon (Alberto Rosende), Clary might find herself alienating Jace because of his best friend, or both altogether because of grief.
