Fans have been waiting for two years wondering when “Scream” Season 3 is going to start airing. The show’s previous season last aired on Oct. 18, 2016, and after that, news about the slasher series tapered off until it faded into the background.
Now, a sign of life has been spotted as Keke Palmer, one of the show’s cast members, responded to a fan on an Instagram story who was wondering if “Scream” Season 3 is a possibility. Palmer speculated that it could air in October – a perfect date since it will be Halloween season – although the actress didn’t confirm anything, CarterMatt reported.
There’s also the fact that other publications aren’t offering any new information about “Scream” Season 3 and showrunners aren’t generating any hype around it. What’s more, although Netflix picked it up when MTV canceled the show, the media service provider hasn’t announced anything lately.
Five months ago, a Twitter user reached out to Netflix asking for any information about the show and if the streaming service was going to be the home of “Scream” Season 3. Netflix replied that they have indeed picked it up, although there are no current plans to revive the slasher series just yet.
This strongly confirms that fans should not expect “Scream” Season 3 this year. So, why exactly didn’t the show continue despite having a decent viewership and a dedicated fan base?
Well, speculations revolve around the fact that producers are staying away from it due to several tragedies happening in school environments around the country. “Scream” Season 3 might get a bad review if it airs on Netflix in a time when there are numerous misfortunes plaguing schools in the U.S.
Indeed, Netflix already caught some heat when it aired “13 Reasons Why” because experts felt it might worsen the mental struggles of teens across America. However, there have been numerous reports that it actually did the opposite as the show managed to open a dialogue between teens and adults to talk about sensitive topics like rape and suicide. Of course, as a slasher series, “Scream” Season 3 doesn’t have that reasoning in its arsenal.
However, if Netflix does decide to green-light production of the next installment, then they could take some inspiration from how writers dealt with “13 Reasons Why.” “Scream” Season 3 could be transformed from a slasher series to something more in-depth, offering insights into the fears and struggles that teenagers often go through, sprinkled with death and mystery, of course.
