Samsung Electronics has unveiled its slimmest flagship smartphone to date, the Galaxy S25 Edge, featuring advanced AI capabilities aimed at younger, on-the-go consumers and designed to gain a competitive edge over Apple. Launching in South Korea on May 23 and in the U.S. on May 30, the S25 Edge will also expand to over 30 global markets, including China and Europe.
Priced from $1,099, the S25 Edge features a 6.7-inch screen and a remarkably thin 5.8mm profile, making it slimmer yet slightly larger than the base S25 model. Samsung achieved the sleeker design by restructuring internal components such as the printed circuit board and thermal systems.
Analysts view the early release as a strategic move to preempt Apple’s expected launch of a thinner iPhone later this year. “By launching ahead of Apple, Samsung is targeting consumers seeking slimmer smartphones,” said Ryu Young-ho, senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities.
Equipped with Samsung’s latest multimodal AI, the device enables real-time interaction using voice and vision, allowing users to ask questions through the camera. The company emphasized that performance and heat management were not compromised despite the thin design.
Executive Vice President Moon Sung-hoon reassured users, stating that the phone includes a redesigned, thinner vapor chamber to prevent overheating. “We engineered it from the ground up to be slim without sacrificing performance,” Moon said.
Samsung reclaimed its position as the top global smartphone vendor in Q1 2025, capturing 20% of the market, slightly ahead of Apple’s 19%, according to Counterpoint Research. However, the company warned that Q2 shipments could face challenges due to ongoing tariff uncertainties that may dampen demand.
