South Korean electronics giant Samsung is taking a rather odd approach with some of its TV offers for 2018. Most people buy giant screens with a 4K resolution to proudly display in their living rooms and this can actually still be done. However, Samsung is also trying to serve those who are more interested in subtlety and mystique, which is why they turned their TVs into chameleons.
Through what Samsung calls “ambient mode,” its TVs can essentially mimic the color and shade of the environment it is in so that it can blend with the surroundings, CNN reports. It seems to have been made specifically for wall-mounted arrangements since putting the TV on a table in the living room would hardly make the feature sensible.
It’s worth noting, however, that the system is not automatic. Users basically have to take a picture of the immediate surroundings of the screen, which will then need to be uploaded into the TV’s Samsung SmartThings app. From there, the TV will try its best to mimic the patterns, color, brightness, and context of the image.
Other than the mimicry, however, the TVs that Samsung showed off also sport impressive qualities. The QLED line feature 4K resolution, with screen sizes starting at a decent 49 inches to an absolutely eye-watering 88 inches, Quartz reports.
As of right now, the price points of these units have not been revealed by Samsung, but it’s a fair bet that they are going to be in the range of thousands of dollars. The most expensive of the TVs shown could even cost up to $20,000, which would come with the richest colors, biggest screen, and unbeatable sharpness.
Those who are fond of tinkering with the interface will also appreciate the changes that Samsung made. With the so-called “Universal Guide,” the company made it much easier to find certain apps or services.
