Potential Shift of OpenAI to a for-Profit Model Under Altman's Leadership.
According to a report published by The Information (via Business Times) on Wednesday, which cited an unnamed individual who mentioned having a conversation with Sam Altman, Altman is reportedly considering reorganizing the company and transforming OpenAI into a conventional, for-profit business.
In contrast to the majority of businesses, OpenAI claims that it operates as a "capped-profit" firm, with its for-profit division overseen by a nonprofit organization.
"We want to increase our ability to raise capital while still serving our mission, and no pre-existing legal structure we know of strikes the right balance," the company said in a blog post, which was published in March 2019, indicating that it was shedding its status as a typical nonprofit organization. "Our solution is to create OpenAI LP as a hybrid of a for-profit and nonprofit—which we are calling a 'capped-profit' company."
An inquiry for comment went unanswered by OpenAI representatives, according to The Information.
