‘STALKER 2’ developer changes game’s subtitle to ‘Heart of Chornobyl’ for a likely meaningful reason

Kyiv-based developer GSC Game World has paused the development of "STALKER 2." The studio, however, applied a small yet meaningful change to the sequel's subtitle recently.

The game's full title will remain "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl." But GSC Game World has subtly tweaked the subtitle by changing "Chernobyl" to "Chornobyl." Fans on ResetEra (via GamesRadar) first noticed the change on Monday.

The texts on the game's Steam product page now show the game's full title as "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl." The game description has also started using Chornobyl to refer to the game's main setting Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. But the promotional art pieces on Steam still use the former title. The change has yet to be applied on other store pages as well, including Epic Games Store and on its Xbox page.

GSC Game World has yet to release a statement on its decision to tweak the "STALKER 2" subtitle, but fans have already come up with a plausible theory on the title change. Chornobyl is the romanized version of the city's name in the Ukrainian language. It is then easy to connect the dots considering the change was made amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has been going on for almost three weeks now.

GSC Game World released an impassioned video titled "Lights! Camera! War…" along with an official statement earlier this month to address fans' concerns for the developers. The studio revealed it was working on a behind-the-scenes video that would have shown motion capture filming works for the cutscenes and other aspects of the gameplay. But it was ultimately paused after Russian troops commenced the invasion of Ukraine in late February.

In the same video, GSC Game World confirmed that work on "STALKER 2" has been temporarily on hold and told fans that the studio is "striving to help our employees and their families to survive." The developers, however, promised, "We will definitely continue. After the victory."
