“Roost” went from being a connected battery company, to one that sold smoke alarms, and finally to a seller of water or ice detectors. This latest leap in niche might seem a little awkward, particularly because more people use smoke detectors than flooding or freezing detectors, but the company believes that they have a market for their product.
A Tech Crunch put it, the “Smart Water and Freeze Detector” by “Roost” is not exactly what can be called “sexy,” particularly when compared to smoke detectors. However, company CMO David Henry actually told Tech Crunch that this new product is in line with their intended expansion goals.
“We were looking to expand our presence in the home and strengthening the position of Roost to provide peace-of-mind in the home,” he said. “By adding the smart water leak detector (with a humidity and temperature sensor) as well as our existing smart nine-volt battery for smoke alarms, we are now capable of truly capturing bits of information around the home and turning them into appropriate notifications when they are most important to the consumer.”
The device costs $49 and will notify owners through the corresponding smartphone app if anything in the home goes wrong. In the case of the flood and ice detection, the device is placed in areas of the house that are liable to get flooded or where the temperature can drop to freezing levels and if any of those things occur, the device sends a notification right away.
According to PC Mag, “Roost” surfaced with its “Roost Smart Battery” last year, which could make existing smoke alarms capable of alerting users if there’s a fire in the house. This way, homeowners would know right away that their home is in danger and can act right away. The device cost $34.87, which is cheaper than their “Smart Water and Freeze Detector.”
