“Rick and Morty” Season 4 is still a long way off despite fans screaming at the top of their lungs on social media for writers and animators to start working on the next installment. The critically acclaimed show has experienced a lot of production delays after season 3 ended because of contract difficulties, Den of Geek reported.
But after those involved in its development seriously sat down and discussed what’s best for the show moving forward, show creator Dan Harmon announced that they’ve been commissioned for 70 new episodes. “Rick and Morty” Season 4 itself is expected to comprise 10 of that 70, with the possibility of the number stretching to 14.
But Harmon said fans should lower their expectations as season 3 was also slated to contain 14 episodes but ultimately included 10. Harmon blames himself for underdelivering, citing his perfectionist nature and his inability to efficiently create more unique avenues for the show. But he also did say that he learned a lot from his mistakes in season 3 and that “Rick and Morty” Season 4 still has the possibility of having four more episodes than usual.
However, if “Rick and Morty” Season 4 will include only 10, that means the 70 new episodes will extend the beloved franchise by seven more seasons. Fans are already over the moon after this announcement, although they’re still a little disappointed that the show isn’t coming back this year.
Writer Ryan Ridley admitted that their team hasn’t even begun writing yet, adding that he’d be surprised if “Rick and Morty” Season 4 will drop anytime soon. Ridley continued that the fourth installment should be expected to air in late 2019.
But given the quality that the series demonstrated in its previous installment, the long wait for “Rick and Morty” Season 4 will definitely be worth it. The show has been hailed as one of the smartest animated series to have been produced and even Elon Musk himself is a huge fan of the franchise.
