The Nintendo Switch is still on a roll and with the release of the new brawler game ARMS, it’s going to get a lot more mileage. Looking at the reviews so far, critics are absolutely loving this new fighting simulator. The prevailing opinion seems to indicate that the game is no only a lot of fun, it might just be the best game on the Switch.
For some background information, ARMS is basically a fighting game that involves colorful characters with extendible extremities or “arms” that they use to battle each other with. These characters can be controlled either via traditional JoyCon or through motion control, which also uses the detachable JoyCon. As Time notes, it might be a perfect title for the console.
In terms of the gameplay, ARMS seems to have provided reviewers with a smashing good time. The movements are responsive, the battles are entertaining, and the gameplay itself is simple to understand. Players basically just need to punch, grab, and throw each other while they dodge, jump, and block to avoid getting knocked out.
As many reviewers note, however, the title is also incredibly deceptive. With its guise as a cartoonish beat ‘em up video game, ARMS hides an incredibly tactical system. From the eyes of a spectator, it may seem silly, almost childish to swing one’s arms around in hopes of defeating the opponent. To the players, however, it’s as serious and strategic as a session of Tekken or Street Fighter.
On top of the fairly simple fighting mechanics, players can also unleash special moves against opponents. These moves are different depending on the character and there are a lot of those to choose from as well. What’s more, each character can equip different ARMS depending on how far you’ve come in the game, Forbes reports.
Without getting too deep into the topic, it is clear that Nintendo might have another smash hit on its hands. This should keep the Switch on a healthy sales streak for quite some time.
