‘Reign’ season 4’s episode 7, titled “Hanging Swords,” will follow Mary and Elizabeth’s continuing rivalry. Elizabeth’s plan against Mary will backfire while Darnley’s surprise visitor will complicate his marriage proposal to the Queen of Scots.
The synopsis for “Hanging Swords” posted on TV Guide reads, “Mary's (Adelaide Kane) marriage to Darnley (Will Kemp) hangs in the balance when Darnley receives a surprise visitor. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's (Rachel Skarsten) plans backfire; and Catherine (Megan Follows) and Narcisse (Craig Parker) find Charles (Spencer McPherson) and attempt to convince him to return to the castle.”
Things won’t be going well for Elizabeth in the upcoming episode since her plans to stop Mary will backfire. The promo opens to the English Queen demanding to invade Scotland immediately.
However, she is told that they cannot invade Mary’s territory without reason. Elizabeth replies in anger, “Then find me a reason!” By the end of the promo, she orders her attack on Scotland.
According to Cartermatt, Elizabeth is bound to grow more desperate in her plans to stop Mary and Darnley’s marriage as she is well aware that their union will destroy everything she has ever worked for. When she finds that her initial plans are unsuccessful, she will choose an alternative strategy in defeating her cousin.
In the previous episode, titled “Love & Death,” Elizabeth ordered Ambassador Richards (Philip Riccio) to bring Darnley back to England but was rejected by Mary and Darnley himself.
Mary learned that an assassin had been sent to kill Darnley but fortunately, Darnley succeeded in fending off the attack. Mary and Darnley’s relationship eventually deepened, which led to them getting intimate. However, things became complicated with Keira’s (Sara Garcia) arrival in Scotland.
Lady Keira and Darnley were in love and initially wanted to get married but Keira was promised to Lord White by her family. Darnley was then summoned to the English court by Elizabeth, and the two brokered a deal. Darnley would refuse marriage to Mary and in return, Elizabeth would pay off Keira’s dowry so she and Darnley could marry.
However, Keira eventually received a letter from Darnley, who intended to break things off with her. Keira then traveled to Scotland with the hope of reuniting with her lost love.
‘Reign’ season 4’s episode 7, titled “Hanging Swords,” is scheduled to air on The CW on March 31, 2017. It was directed by Lee Rose and written by Chris Atwood & Kamran Pasha. It will be followed by episode 8, titled "Uncharted Waters," scheduled to be released on April 7 and directed by Fred Gerber.
