Publishers Can’t Agree If Pokémon Pokken Tournament For Switch Is A Good Or Bad Thing

When it comes to the video game media, it’s usually easy to predict which way publications will lean on particular topics. However, when it comes to the newly announced Switch version of the Pokken Tournament DX set in the Pokemon universe, outlets seem to disagree on whether or not it’s a good thing. Some are saying that it’s exactly what the console needs right now while others say that Nintendo should quit porting stuff to the Switch.

For those unfamiliar with Pokken Tournament DX, it’s basically the deluxe version of an arena fighting game that involves Pokémon. Initially released for the Wii U, the brawler features fast-paced battles, frantic combos, and cute critters beating the life out of each other.

One of the publications that think adding the game to the Switch roster is a great thing is Time, which notes how the critically acclaimed title will boost the console’s standing. What’s more, the publication sees the move as a means of bolstering the company’s marketing arm, with players going about the streets and randomly challenging each other.

After all, the console already has the motion-controlled fighting game ARMS to give it that social aspect that Nintendo fans have gotten used to. Adding Pokken Tournament DX to that list is only going to make the company’s case for portable gaming even stronger.

On the other hand, there are those that are not too thrilled with the company’s tendency to rehash its old games, which includes Forbes. While the publication does acknowledge that it makes sense for Nintendo to bring some of its Wii U games to the Switch because many of the new customers never owned the older console, there is the matter of new titles to consider.

Making brand new versions of Nintendo’s titles can take a long time and by porting older games to the Switch, the company loses some of the incentive to step it up and release new titles. It’s also worth noting that many of those who own a Switch also owned a Wii U, so the ports aren’t exactly going to be that exciting for them.
