The re-released version of the Xbox exclusive Phantom Dust game is going to be available for free tomorrow for a limited time. The announcement came via a Twitter post by Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg. Boasting improved graphics, aspect ratio, and resolution, this fan-favorite title retains much of its original mechanics.
Phantom Dust is one of those games that simply broke through the popularity ceiling and hovered there for a while. Its sequel was rumored to have been in the works for years, but it all came to nothing, especially when the development studio behind the game was shut down two years ago.
For now, fans will simply have to settle for the re-released version of the original. It will at least be free when it comes out tomorrow, May 16th, Gamespot reports.
Now, there are a few things that players should note with regards to the game. For the PC version, it is only available for free for units with Windows 10 installed. This means that units with Windows 8.1 OS and lower won’t be able to take advantage of the deal.
It’s also worth noting that it’s essentially the same game with improved graphics. Phantom Dust’s creative director, Adam Isgreen told Polygon as much when talking about the game’s new features. So, anyone who already has the game and doesn’t really care about how it looks won’t be missing out on much.
“We haven’t changed anything about the way that the original game worked,” Isgreen explained. “So if people want to grind and they want to play exactly like they did when the original game came out, that is all in place. Everything about how the game works and functions is there. We really wanted to allow people to jump into multiplayer and play immediately.”
For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s basically a card-collection simulator with magic dueling elements. Players fight each other by building their decks and using spells.
