Peru’s National Jury of Elections (JNE) has officially requested a “comprehensive and exhaustive IT audit” of the ongoing general election results, intensifying focus on transparency and electoral integrity in the country. The announcement comes as the vote count from the April 12 elections remains incomplete, with approximately 97.5% of ballots processed and no definitive outcome for the second-place presidential contender.
The uncertainty surrounding the election has created political tension, as conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori continues to lead the race but awaits confirmation of her opponent for the scheduled June runoff. The battle for second place remains extremely tight between left-wing congressman Roberto Sanchez and ultra-conservative candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga. The two are separated by roughly 28,000 votes, with more than one million ballots still under review due to disputed tally sheets.
According to the JNE, the proposed independent audit is a critical step toward reinforcing confidence in Peru’s electoral process. The organization emphasized that the move aims to ensure transparency, accuracy, and credibility in the final election results. A spokesperson clarified that the audit, if conducted, would not disrupt the ongoing review of contested ballots.
The 2026 Peru elections have been marked by confusion and controversy, with several political figures raising allegations of electoral fraud. However, international observers, including representatives from the European Union, have reported no evidence supporting claims of irregularities. Despite this, public trust has been shaken, prompting calls for greater accountability.
Adding to the political pressure, Piero Corvetto, head of Peru’s electoral authority, resigned on April 21 amid growing demands for clarity. While Corvetto acknowledged logistical challenges during the vote-counting process, he consistently denied any wrongdoing or manipulation.
Election officials have stated that the final certified results are expected by May 15. As Peru awaits clarity, the outcome of the audit request could play a key role in restoring confidence in the nation’s democratic process.
