The new system update for Sony’s PlayStation 4 comes with a handful of useful features, including external hard drive support.
According to a blog post, Sony said users who will be participating in the beta version of the update, which is named “Sasuke,” can have access to these features. Regular users will most likely have access in the following weeks.
Tom’s Guide considers the external hard drive plug-in the PS4’s biggest advancement. Once the update has been done, users can simply plug in any USB-enabled hard drive, and PS4 will easily recognize it as an acceptable storage option. For users who play a lot of games, the update is a piece of good news, as the advancement will now allow them to store up to over one hundred big-budget games.
Another piece of good news is that the update will also bring PS4 users the Boost Mode - which is a feature that is said to deliver better performance for games that don’t support event the PlayStation 4 Pro.
On the other hand, Polygon said testers have noticed that the feature has caveats, but there are workarounds. Mladen Tapavicki was quoted as saying, “Experience improved gameplay, including higher frame rates, for some games that were released before the introduction of PS4 Pro (CUH-7000 series). Turn this off if you experience unexpected behaviour during gameplay.”
Some players are also suggesting that the Boost Mode will also help games with unlocked frame rate.
Other features in the update include custom wallpapers, support to view 3D Blu-Rays in virtual reality using PlayStation VR, and more simplified notifications, The Verge added.
