Anyone who has ever played Overwatch will know that it’s an excellent team-based shooter. However, it seems Blizzard thinks that it can be a great Battle Royale platform as well since a Deathmatch mode is apparently in the works. With the surging popularity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it’s clear that gamers want a Hunger Games-esque title, but can Overwatch actually deliver satisfaction?
As Kotaku notes, Blizzard had said in the past that Overwatch was not going to feature a Deathmatch mode. The developers wanted to keep it a team-based experience, whether it’s against another team or a horde of enemies. Now, though, the company has changed its mind.
In a recent video, Jeff Kaplan explained that the precursor for the new mode was actually Arcade. Apparently, the feature that was added late in 2016 is what finally convinced him that a free for all would be viable.
“The coolest part of the Arcade is that it’s opened up our ability to as developers to introduce game modes to you guys that we wouldn’t normally feel comfortable putting in the quick-play or competitive rotation,” Kaplan said.
Apparently, the allotment of loot boxes for the Deathmatch mode will depend on how well players did during the match. If they make it to the top half, they get loot.
The new mode will also feature modified versions of existing maps as well as an entirely new one, Polygon reports. The new setting is called Château Guillard and it is apparently the family estate of Widowmaker herself. Details regarding the new map are still scarce and Blizzard has yet to provide images of what it even looks like.
In any case, players now have a new reason to be excited about playing their favorite multiplayer shooter. It’s still in a test phase, but it will eventually be released everywhere once the final version is done.
