The year is almost over without any solid update about the production and release of “Overlord” season 4. But for fans desperately needing an answer about the anime series’ future, they might find some clues from the preceding installment.

'Overlord' season 4: Renewed or canceled?

It has been more than a year since the “Overlord” anime hiatus started with the third season concluding in October 2018. What makes the wait more dreadful is the complete silence on the part of anime producers about the future of the series, especially about their plans for “Overlord” season 4.

Without an official word to go on, fans can only speculate if they are getting “Overlord” season 4 or not. One of the clues that they can pick up came from the season 3 finale. Right after the final frame with Ainz Ooal Gown, the show left fans with the message, “The story goes on.”

Unfortunately, even this cannot be counted as a definite confirmation that a fourth season would be in the works. Without an official announcement on “Overlord” season 4, the said message can also be just an encouragement for fans to following the story through the light novel series.

On the other hand, another helpful clue in determining an anime show’s future is its Blu-ray/DVD sales. In this case, “Overlord” season 4 has a strong chance of getting produced. Season 3’s per volume release had a solid performance in the sales charts in Japan. The Blu-ray/DVD sales of each volume were recorded at more than 6,000 copies immediately within the first-week releases, which is usually a good sign.

'Overlord' season 4 release is ‘likely’, anime writer suggests

Anime fans had a brief moment of celebration earlier this year when it was reported that “Overlord” season 4 was confirmed at an anime convention in Germany. However, some followers of the series were skeptical about the news.

Some argued that none of the official social media channels of the series supported by making an official announcement. It turned out they were right. A fan later explained on the show’s Fandom page that there was no confirmation. Instead, episode writer Yukie Sugawara only stated that the series is “likely” to be renewed when asked about “Overlord” season 4.
