OpenAI has hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of the open-source artificial intelligence agent OpenClaw, according to CEO Sam Altman’s announcement on social media Sunday. The move follows OpenClaw’s recent surge in popularity, as the AI agent gained viral attention for its ability to function as a highly capable personal assistant.
OpenClaw quickly attracted interest across the AI community and social media platforms due to its autonomous task execution. Users highlighted the agent’s ability to operate directly on personal machines, performing tasks such as checking emails, replying to messages, organizing workflows, and even generating new code. Its real-world functionality positioned it as a powerful example of how AI agents could transform personal productivity and automation.
Altman stated that Steinberger will help “drive the next generation of personal agents” at OpenAI. He also confirmed that OpenClaw will remain an open-source project, with OpenAI providing continued support and development resources. Steinberger separately announced his move to OpenAI in a blog post, signaling a new chapter for both the developer and the rapidly evolving AI startup.
AI agents—software systems capable of performing goal-based, autonomous tasks similar to human workers—are increasingly viewed as the next major advancement in artificial intelligence. Industry leaders, including Altman, believe these systems could redefine how individuals and businesses interact with technology. However, AI agents remain in early development stages, and challenges persist.
OpenClaw has also faced scrutiny over potential security risks, particularly if users configure the system improperly. As AI agents gain more control over local machines and sensitive data, cybersecurity concerns remain a critical topic within the industry.
Steinberger’s hiring underscores OpenAI’s strategic focus on expanding AI agent capabilities while balancing innovation with responsible deployment.
