Morgan Hill, CA, Oct. 11, 2017 -- The OpenADR Alliance today announced the availability of the first certified product based on the OpenADR 2.0 Demand Response Program Guide. The guide and certification program was designed to further the interoperability of products certified as OpenADR compliant. The certification program is a simple add-on to the current OpenADR 2.0b Profile Certification that is being required by utilities worldwide.
“Universal Devices is first to market with an OpenADR-certified Energy Management and Building Automation product that incorporates several DR program templates for the utility’s use,” said Rolf Bienert, technical director, OpenADR Alliance. “This first certification is key in laying the ground work for other members to participate in the program and utilities to get value from the program. I am optimistic that we will see a number of other certified products enter the market in 2018.”
“There needs to be a standard, well understood, and bidirectional mode of communications between the utilities and their customers in order to address shifting peak times and negative wholesale prices in particular and grid volatility in general. With the Program Guide, OpenADR takes an already robust specification to the next level by prescribing certain signals for certain grid conditions. As a VEN manufacturer, this is very important for us since it makes customers feel confident that choosing our products will indeed provide them with the solution they seek”, said Michel Kohanim, CEO of Universal Devices, Inc.
The OpenADR 2.0 DR Program Implementation Guide is a tool for utilities to utilize the OpenADR standard and to implement different kinds of Auto DR programs. The test harness used in the certification program validates interoperability of VTNs and VENs supporting a number of programs including:
- Critical peak pricing,
- Capacity bidding program,
- Thermostat program (Thermostat)/direct load control (DLC)
- Fast DR dispatch (Fast DR)/ancillary services program
- Residential electric vehicle (EV Charging) DR program
- Public station electric vehicle (EV Charging) real-time pricing program
- Distributed energy resources (DER) DR program
A number of utilities and manufacturers support the DR Program Guide and certification program including: Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Portland General Electric, EPRI, AutoGrid, BPL Global, Blue Pillar, CaSA, Encycle, Fuji Electric, Honeywell, IPKeys, OATI, Kyocera, Schneider Electric, Steffes and Universal Devices.
