In the fast-changing field of smartphone technology, Samsung and Google have emerged as market leaders in delivering extended system update services for their flagship devices. The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8 series both offer seven years of OS updates. OnePlus has taken a different approach, pledging to four years of system upgrades for the OnePlus 12 and another year of security patches.
OnePlus President Kinder Liu Prioritizes User Experience Over 7 Years Of Updates
OnePlus President Kinder Liu recently discussed this choice in an interview with Tom's Guide, emphasizing the importance of a pleasant user experience over just prolonging the length of system updates.
Liu contends that just extending the system update timetable does not solve the underlying problems that may occur with hardware performance over time, as per Gizmo China. He makes a metaphorical parallel between a mobile phone and a sandwich, explaining that while software represents the fillings, hardware functions as the bread.
OnePlus Worked With TUV Rheinland To Ensure Consistent Performance On The Hardware Level
Some manufacturers claim to provide seven years of system upgrades, but Liu believes they may neglect the reality that after four years, the hardware performance of the phone may deteriorate dramatically, much like the bread in a sandwich turning moldy. Despite the extended software support, he adds that the end result may be a poor user experience.
To address concerns about hardware performance, OnePlus has worked with TÜV Rheinland SUD in Germany for many years to undertake rigorous simulated use tests for the OnePlus 12 and 12R. Based on the results of these tests, the business guarantees users four years of "fast and smooth" functioning.
This proactive approach strives to ensure that the hardware stays up with software upgrades, resulting in a consistent and pleasant user experience throughout the maintenance period. In addition to hardware constraints, Liu brings up the issue of battery depreciation after extended use.
He emphasizes that while competitors claim to support system updates for up to seven years, the batteries in their phones may not survive the full time. This highlights the practical challenges of prolonged gadget usage, as well as the possible influence on overall performance.
