Netflix’s plans for its relatively new gaming business appear to go beyond just licensing games and the mobile space. Several job listings for “Netflix Games Studio” were recently spotted, suggesting that the company is working to develop two all-new AAA games — one for PC and another for an action RPG.
The Netflix Jobs website currently lists several open positions for the “Netflix Games Studio” based in Los Angeles, California. And video game fans should know that these job listings are usually a mine for information on upcoming titles.
As first spotted by mobilegamer.biz, Netflix is looking to hire a game director for its internal studio that would lead a team for a “brand-new AAA PC game.” The company is looking for an industry veteran with at least 10 years of experience in game design, including working as a creative director before.
The same job listing also confirms Netflix’s PC game will be prototyped on Unreal Engine and that it may be a shooter game. The post also mentioned “live service games,” suggesting that the project could be for an online shooter game. It could be different in terms of monetization, though, as Netflix Games’ current selling point is “no ads, no in-app purchases.”
However, it could still be a bare-bones development at the moment. Netflix wants the to-be-hired game director to lead the development team from the “concept phase,” which usually means pre-production in game development. Netflix is also looking ahead because it wants the game director to help develop worlds, characters, and narratives “that are worthy of a Netflix film/TV series.”
Netflix will also hire an art director and technical director for a new AAA game. But it is unclear if these listings are for the same project.
Another interesting job listing is up for a lead engineer, who will also work in Netflix’s Los Angeles-based games studio. The job descriptions are a bit different, though, suggesting it could be for a different project. Netflix says the person to be hired in this position will be working on “an exciting new 3rd person action RPG.” The job requirements for the lead engineer suggest the game is being developed for mobile.
It is worth noting, though, that almost all job listings for the Netflix Games Studio indicate that the Los Angeles location will “incubate” projects for the company’s gaming business. That means not all concepts or projects it will undertake would be released in the future.
