High Point, NC, Oct. 23, 2017 -- View video announcement here.
Marc Randolph, Netflix co-founder and Silicon Valley icon, has joined High Point University as Entrepreneur in Residence.
Through this role, Randolph will work with students in a variety of majors across campus, such as entrepreneurship, business and communication. He first visited HPU in 2015, when Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president, interviewed Randolph in front of a live audience for UNC-TV public television. Randolph also met with students who pitched their business plans to him inside the Belk Entrepreneurship Center in Cottrell Hall.
“Our students will have the distinct opportunity to learn from a technology icon who has changed the way the entire world consumes media,” says Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president. “His entrepreneurial spirit reflects the importance of free enterprise, personal initiative and a growth mindset, which we value on our campus. His mentorship will benefit students measurably as they build their own ventures and launch their own careers in the world.”
Randolph’s role reflects the university’s #1 Most Innovative Regional College in the South ranking from U.S. News & World Report. Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak also serves as HPU’s Innovator in Residence, making HPU the only university in the nation where both of these technology leaders have committed to serving in residence.
“My first business pitch was to Marc Randolph,” says Mandy Engelman, who was a freshman when she pitched her blog and website to Randolph in 2015, and continues to operate her business today as a junior. “I didn’t think of myself as an entrepreneur before I met Mr. Randolph; I was just a girl with a blog. But it was a mind-opening experience that changed my perspective on everything. I’ve spoken to a lot of friends who go to other schools about this, and they’ve asked me, ‘Why are you meeting with the co-founder of Netflix? How did you get that opportunity?’ I’m blown away by the opportunities this university gives me to help grow my business and help all of my dreams come true. There’s no other university that would believe in a student the way High Point believes in us.”
At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.® HPU, located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, is a liberal arts institution with more than 4,900 undergraduate and graduate students. It is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News and World Report for Best Regional Colleges in the South, No. 1 for Most Innovative Regional Colleges in the South and No. 1 for Best Undergraduate Teaching in the South. The Princeton Review named HPU in the 2018 edition of “The Best 382 Colleges” in the nation, as well as Best Career Services (No. 19), Best-Run Colleges (No. 20), Best College Dorm Rooms (No. 7), a Great School for Communication Majors and a Great School for Business/Finance Majors. For seven years in a row, HPU has been named a College of Distinction with special recognition for business and education programs, and The National Council on Teacher Quality ranks HPU’s elementary education program as one of the best in the nation.
