After months of total silence, Netflix finally announced the production of “Narcos: Mexico” season 3. While it will serve as a continuation of the events from the second season, expect the paradigms to shift as new cartels rise to power along with other familiar figures in the drug trafficking world such as Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán (Alejandro Edda).
‘Narcos: Mexico’ season 3 production confirmed under new showrunner
Netflix is quite unpredictable when it comes to the renewal of big-budget TV shows. With the second season released last February, the lack of updates about “Narcos: Mexico” season 3 may have led some fans to think the show will not be renewed.
However, the streaming giant surprised fans as the “Narcos: Mexico” season 3 production was announced earlier this week. The production also welcomes a new showrunner, Carlo Bernard, who has been working on the franchise since the original “Narcos” that premiered in 2016.
‘Narcos: Mexico’ season 3 plot: What to expect
The second season also ended with quite a solid conclusion with Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) being arrested by Mexican law enforcement. Season 2 ended with fictional DEA Agent Walter Breslin (Scoot McNairy) meeting Gallardo in prison, but the scene felt more like a narration of the chaos that is about to unfold in “Narcos: Mexico” season 3. THR confirms that McNairy will reprise his role, but not Luna.
Aside from Gallardo’s story already completed, the actor is also going to work on another project for Disney+ in a “Star Wars” prequel series. Breslin will have to watch the rise of other drug cartels that will thrive from Gallardo’s fall, including the Sinaloa Cartel known as the group led by El Chapo. Edda and McNairy will be joined by other returning cast members José Maria Yazpik as Amado Fuentes, Alberto Ammann as Hélmer "Pacho" Herrera, Alfonso Dosal as Benjamín Arellano Félix, Mayra Hermosillo as Enedina Arellano Félix, Matt Letscher as Jaime Kuykendall, Manuel Masalva as Ramón Arellano Félix, and Gorka Lasaosa as Héctor Luis Palma Salazar.
‘Narcos: Mexico’ season 3 release date
Netflix has yet to set a release date for “Narcos: Mexico” season 3, but the same THR report mentions that plans are already in place to film on location in Mexico despite the ongoing pandemic. But if one would speculation, considering the series has only been renewed at this point, new episodes might not arrive until late 2021 to 2022.
