Nintendo is currently riding high on the popularity of its Switch console and its flagship video game, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, at the moment. As such, it wouldn’t be surprising for the company to take advantage of all the extra exposure with new offerings. According to rumors, this could include a mobile video game title from the Legend of Zelda franchise.
This rumor comes courtesy of The Wall Street Journal, which cites reliable sources familiar with the project saying that a Legend of Zelda mobile game is in development. Nintendo is apparently considering creating an Animal Crossing app as well. If so, these new additions would bolster the Japanese company’s growing list of mobile offerings.
So far, the mobile games that were handled directly by Nintendo and are under its brand include the controversial Super Mario Run, Miitomo, and Fire Emblem Heroes. To a lesser extent, Pokémon Go could also be considered part of the company’s roster, but it largely belongs to the Pokémon Company and Niantic Labs.
Now, while Nintendo has arguably been doing better on the mobile front of its business, it’s still in its infancy. More to the point, the company has had trouble monetizing its games in the past, with Super Mario Run being a prime example.
The biggest problem with that case is the game’s one-time paywall halfway into the playthrough, which would cost players $10 to unlock the full content. Unfortunately, this did not sit well with players, who were more used to either outright costs or micro-transactions.
Fortunately, there are a few ways to fix this problem when the mobile Zelda game comes out. One is to simply charge players to play the game upfront, with a price of $3 to $5, Forbes reports. Nintendo could also turn to micro-transactions, with bonus missions, costumes, weapons, land, and even story content being potential unlockable options.
