McDonald’s Canada has added a new truck service for the distribution of its supplies to its restaurant outlets around Montreal in Quebec. The fast-food chain unveiled its all-electric Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 semi-truck on Wednesday, April 6.
Based on the report, the electric semi-truck was leased by Martin Brower, McDonald’s Canada’s supply chain distribution partner, and the units are going to be based in its distribution center located in Montréal’s Baie d’Urfé.
The Volvo VNR all-electric semi-truck will be pulling McDonald’s trailers to different branches within the 150 km. or 93-mile radius. The company said that the initial deployment of the electric semi would serve as a pilot test to see how the distribution using the truck will go.
It was added that the use of an all-electric vehicle is part of McDonald’s Canada’s bigger plan to adapt and transition to low-emission vehicles for its entire distribution fleet in the region. Currently, the Canadian unit of McDonald’s operates more than 1,400 restaurants, and the plan to go “green” has been deemed feasible here.
McDonald’s Canada will especially observe how the Volvo VNR semi will perform in different weather conditions. Since the country can be too cold in winters, the fast-food giant wants to see if this condition will have an impact on the truck model.
McDonald’s global aim is to achieve net-zero emissions across its restaurants around the world by the year 2050. The Canadian unit said that getting the Volvo VNR Electric for its service is one way that it can do its part in McDonald’s aim of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions globally.
“This trial has the potential to influence a major shift in the way we approach supply chain distribution that will bring us closer to reaching McDonald’s net-zero goals,” McDonald’s Canada’s president and chief executive officer, Jacques Mignault, said in a press release. “Considering the potential impact the trial could have on our business and our global greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments, this is an extremely significant moment for the company.”
He further added, “We are grateful to collaborate with partners like Martin Brower and Volvo Trucks North America who share our vision, and acknowledge the support from the Québec government on this initiative.”
