McDonald’s made an announcement last year, saying that its McRib is retiring. The fast-food chain even launched a “Farewell Tour” so customers may enjoy their favorite food item for the last time.
However, a big surprise came this week after McDonald’s revealed that its McRib barbeque-slathered pork sandwich is making a comeback this fall. With this announcement, USA Today stated that the previous farewell tour turned out to be “nothing but a ruse.”
The Sandwich’s Return to the Menu
McDonald’s confirmed the return of the McRib to its restaurants on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The home of the Big Mac did not say a specific date for the sandwich’s arrival but said it will be this fall, so there is a possibility that it will be some time this month.
Many customers thought the food item was gone for good, so they will surely be happy with its return this year. Since it supposedly “retired” last year, it can be said that McRib just took a short “leave” from the restaurants instead.
“It turns out not everyone was ready to say goodbye to the McRib after last year’s Farewell Tour,” McDonald’s announced. “While it won’t be available nationwide, some lucky fans may find their favorite elusive saucy sandwich at their local McDonald’s restaurants this November.”
Brief History of the McRib at McDonald’s
As mentioned on Fox4 News, the McRib first made its appearance in McDonald’s stores in 1981 at a location in Kansas City, Kansas. Since then, customers enjoyed the sandwich, although it has never been a fixed item on the menu.
McDonald’s only sold its McRib in stores at certain periods. There is no fixed season like the other food items, so the sandwich’s appearance has been best described as fleeting and sporadic. This elusiveness may be one of the reasons why customers continue to ask for them through the years.
