Millions of fans look up to Lady Gaga as the singer-actress often preaches about loving oneself. But Gaga candidly opened up about how she felt when auditioning for “A Star Is Born” and revealed that, at some point, the process made her realize how “insecure” she felt.

In a report by The L.A. Times last week, the “Million Reasons” singer narrated how her audition for the role of Ally went down. “It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real,” Gaga said. “I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach.”

According to the report, her co-star and the film’s director, Bradley Cooper, was present during her audition. Like any actor would, Gaga arrived with full makeup, which Cooper later asked her to remove before starting the screening process.

The report added that Cooper wanted to see Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, “completely open” and with “no artifice.” Before finally getting the role, Gaga was asked to go through a screen test in 2016, which happened at her home, according to the L.A. Times. It was at that moment when she reportedly realized that she needed to “completely let go” and put her trust in Cooper.

The 2018 release of “A Star Is Born,” which stars Gaga and Cooper, is now its third movie remake. Before Gaga, Janet Gaynor (1937), Judy Garland (1954), and Barbra Streisand (1976) each played the character of a girl named Esther with practically the same background story as Gaga’s Ally. Meanwhile, the 2018 film is also a milestone for Cooper as it marks his first directorial credit.

Fans will be thrilled to know that Gaga is not the only music star to appear in the movie. Halsey revealed on Wednesday that she has a “little cameo” in “A Star Is Born.”

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31. It is also set to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival this month. But its official public release happens on Oct. 5.
