Exactly a year after LG announced it is leaving the global smartphone market, the company reiterated its promise to deliver several years of Android updates to a few phone models. That will come to fruition soon as LG confirms Android 12 is headed to three of its phones sometime in the second quarter of 2022.
An announcement post on LG’s Korean website was published last week letting its customers know about its software update plan for the year. The company listed six phones that are confirmed to get updates in the second quarter of the year, but only three of them are getting the Android 12 upgrade -- LG Q92 5G, LG V50 ThinQ, and LG V50S ThinQ.
The rest of the list, which includes LG Q52, LG Velvet, and LG Wing, is getting a performance update. The website says (via machine translation) it will “enhance your phone's security with Google security updates.”
LG did not mention a specific release date for the Android 12 and Google security updates, but another note on the website says the schedule could still change depending on the development process and carrier certifications.
The company also noted, “The list of models subject to OS upgrade is for Korea and does not apply equally to other countries.” But that only likely means that the Android 12 and the latest security updates for phones sold in other regions would come at a different (possibly later) time.
A few days after LG announced it was closing its smartphone business last year, the company committed to releasing three years of Android upgrades for its premium phones. “The three OS update guarantee applies to LG premium phones released in 2019 and later (G series, V series, VELVET, Wing) while certain 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K series will receive two OS updates,” the company said in a press release.
LG also previously released a list of phone models that would be getting Android 12 and Android 13 updates. If the company plans on keeping its original plan, only the LG Wing, LG Velvet, and LG Velvet LTE are getting the Android 13 upgrade in the future.
