British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing political turmoil after more than 70 Labour lawmakers publicly called for his resignation following Labour’s disappointing performance in recent local elections. The pressure intensified on Monday as four ministerial aides resigned, raising fresh doubts about Starmer’s ability to lead the Labour Party into the next UK general election scheduled for 2029.

During a speech in London, Starmer urged party members and voters to support his leadership, warning that a leadership battle could create political instability and weaken Labour’s position. Despite his appeal, senior Labour figures reportedly questioned whether he should begin preparing for an orderly transition of power. Reports from British media indicated that several cabinet ministers, including Shabana Mahmood and Yvette Cooper, encouraged discussions about a potential departure timeline.

The Labour Party’s poor showing in local elections has fueled frustration among lawmakers, with many blaming Starmer’s leadership style and policy direction. Former junior minister Catherine West stated that numerous MPs supported calls for a leadership contest as early as September. Meanwhile, Starmer’s allies warned that replacing another party leader so soon could trigger further political chaos similar to the instability previously seen within the Conservative Party.

Starmer defended his leadership by promising a “complete break” from past political approaches and pledged to strengthen Britain’s economy, improve living standards, and rebuild trust with voters. He also highlighted plans to strengthen ties with Europe, support key industries, and create more employment opportunities for young people. Despite increasing criticism, Starmer insisted he would not step down voluntarily, declaring that he remains committed to leading both the Labour Party and the country through ongoing economic and global challenges.
