Kate Middleton and Prince William officially announced their engagement in October 2010, a few months before they tied the knot in 2011. But prior to this official engagement, it was revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge already made a “marriage pact” as early as 2007 to make sure that they will get married.
William and Kate’s marriage pact
According to UK’s The Sun, after Kate and William started dating in 2003 but they briefly broke up in 2007 before getting back together again. As they reunite, royal expert and author Katie Nicholl claimed that the couple made a pact to marry each other in the future.
In her book titled “Kate: The Future Queen,” the author wrote that the duke and duchess started talking about marriage while still dating because they want to take the pressure off themselves and make sure that they will be together forever.
“There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term,” Nicholl wrote in her book. “For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.”
After making the promise, the two broke up again but reunited after a short while. They realized that they have to fulfill their pact - it’s a promise after all, and they don’t want it broken.
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s engagement
After their reunion, they dated for three more years before Prince William formally asked Kate Middleton to marry him. The proposal took place in Kenya in 2010. It was a secluded rustic log cabin situated at the foot of Mount Kenya.
Express reported that it was not Queen Elizabeth or other members of the royal family who learned about the engagement first, but they were someone unexpected. Ian and Jane Craig were the first people to know about William’s proposal because they are the owners of the cabin.
The odd thing is that the Craig’s are parents of Prince William’s former girlfriend - Jecca. The couple was said to have sworn to secrecy, so the news was only revealed when an official announcement about the engagement was posted by the Royal family.
