Donald Trump’s daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump has emerged as one of the key figures in the congressional committee’s probe into the Capitol insurrection. A new report revealed that Ms. Trump called then-vice president Mike Pence “a good man” on that day when he refused to overturn the 2020 election results.
The committee has asked for Ms. Trump to testify regarding what transpired behind the scenes on January 6, 2021, when thousands of Trump supporters broke into the Capitol. At the time, Pence was subject to a pressure campaign by the former president and his allies to overturn his election loss to Joe Biden.
Congressional testimony revealed, according to the Associated Press, that Trump told Pence that he “did not have the courage” to overturn the election results and that he had the duty to reject the Electoral College votes. Even after Trump called him a “wimp,” Pence maintained his refusal to do so and even went as far as to issue a statement saying that he had no authority to do what Trump wanted.
Following the call, Ms. Trump reportedly turned to Lt. General Keith Kellogg, who was Pence’s national security adviser, and said that Pence was “a good man.” Kellogg agreed.
Following the testimony, the House Committee is looking to get what else Ms. Trump may have seen and heard on that day as they put together all the events that led to the insurrection and even after. The probe has included the attempts made by Trump and his allies to stay in power which included a possible coup.
While Ms. Trump has yet to appear for a testimony, a report by Vanity Fair revealed that Ms. Trump, and her husband, former White House adviser Jared Kushner, are not exactly being received well by their fellow residents in Surfside in Florida. The town’s residents leaned democratic in 2020 and voted for Biden.
Ms. Trump and Kushner relocated to Florida after leaving Washington in 2021, with former friends in New York apparently unwilling to give them a warm welcome back into its high society.
The report noted that while the town’s Trump-supporting mayor was excited about Ms. Trump and Kushner’s presence in the area, town commissioner Eliana Salzhauer expressed concern when she told the Washingtonian that the former president’s supporters would come into the area.
Salzhauer added that she does not want Surfside to play a part in rehabilitating the couple’s image.
