Israel has ordered the United Kingdom to close its consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days, escalating a diplomatic dispute after Britain, France and Canada announced new sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The British consulate, which handles Palestinian affairs in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, has maintained a presence in the city dating back to 1839. British diplomats working there will also lose their diplomatic status within 30 days, according to officials and sources familiar with the decision.
UK personnel assigned to a U.S.-led Gaza coordination mission in Israel and British diplomats based in Ramallah have reportedly been given seven days to leave. Israel also said Britain would no longer be permitted to train Palestinian security forces in the West Bank.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said he regretted the consulate closure but was not surprised by Israel’s response. He defended the UK sanctions, accusing Israeli authorities of failing to adequately address settler violence against Palestinians.
Britain announced measures including a ban on imports from Israeli settlements and restrictions targeting companies and individuals that provide construction, infrastructure, financing and real estate services to settlements. France and Canada also announced bans on settlement products, while several other countries endorsed the British measures.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned Britain’s action as “morally distorted” and accused London of interfering in Israel’s domestic affairs ahead of the country’s election.
Israel has also barred 12 British lawmakers and other nationals from entering the country, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
The dispute comes amid growing international criticism of Israel over the Gaza war, settlement expansion and rising violence in the West Bank. Britain, France and Canada formally recognized the State of Palestine in 2025 and have previously imposed sanctions connected to Israeli settlement activity.
Israel’s government is expected to discuss additional responses to countries that imposed sanctions or supported Britain’s measures, according to sources familiar with the matter. The latest confrontation signals a further deterioration in relations between Israel and several traditional Western allies.
