HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. and LOS ANGELES, Oct. 05, 2017 -- Intelligent Product Solutions (IPS) today announced its partnership with Lighticians to develop a mobile app that manages motion picture lights wirelessly. With this IPS-designed app, it eliminates the time-consuming and cumbersome process of manually adjusting movie studio lighting. The Lighticians mobile app, called Juicer App, is now being used on movie shooting locations and in studio sound stages. IPS is a leading product design and development firm.
Used by the chief lighting technician, or gaffer, on a motion-picture or television production unit, Juicer works with the company’s ShineBox (a WiFi to DMX bridge with a standards-based routing protocol) to instantly transform any DMX (stage or studio lighting) device into a wirelessly controlled light, directly from the app. The Juicer App comes bundled with a curated library of light profiles for quick setup, and also allows users to create custom lighting profiles to fit their needs. It currently supports intensity, RGB, RGB-I, and color temperature type light sources.
“We selected IPS as our product design partner because of its full range of product design expertise, and in particular, its expertise in designing wireless products and mobile software apps,” said Tim Duff, CEO of Lighticians. “IPS also has the engineering expertise to integrate the app with complex DMX lighting systems and to develop the ShineBox solution.”
He added, “Dynamic lighting is crucial to visual storytelling. The pace of content creation is faster than ever and exceeds the resources available to productions, placing pressure on gaffers and other lighting creatives to do more with less -- which is why we saw a need for our Juicer App. The Juicer App and ShineBox wireless system also allow the gaffer to provide more cost effective lighting solutions and controls for smaller on-location sets that would normally only allow for manual control.”
As part of the design process, IPS designed the app with a user interface that enables the lighting technician to configure and see the entire network on their tablet or phone screen. User-friendly colors and the simple to use interface enhance the app’s appeal. IPS built Juicer with a proprietary and smart software stack that integrates everything needed to establish the network, provision each lighting device, and transmit or receive various forms of DMX over IP, such as sACN E1.31, which is compatible with all sACN bridges and devices already in a gaffer's kit.
Unlike other movie studio lighting solutions that use proprietary technology, the Lighticians’ app uses high performance WiFi radios and standards-based routing protocols that enable it to work seamlessly with mobile devices.
“With the Lightician’s app and ShineBox solution, we designed a user-friendly software and hardware solution that makes it easier and quicker for movie studio lighting technicians to do their job,” said Mitch Maiman, President and Cofounder of Intelligent Product Solutions. “Working with Lighticians has been a real partnership, and we are thrilled to work with startups such as Lighticians to help make their design concepts a success.”
