When it was announced that Intel would be working with AMD to creator a processor that will be equipped with a powerful GPU, it was considered a shot from across the bow to NVidia. New details about this new project were recently revealed, providing some idea as to what it can do. For an integrated graphics chip in an Intel CPU, it is impressive.
The details were published on Intel’s local website in India, providing gamers with a glimpse of what they can expect from the new CPU/GPU melding. Apparently, the Intel chip is called the i7-8809G and it served to confirm many of the rumored features of the chip while simultaneously debunking others.
As PC World notes, many expected that the CPU would feature the AMD Polaris GPU, which is found in the company’s other graphics cards such as the Radeon RX 580. As it turns out, the chip will feature the Radeon Vega, which is at a higher tier of AMD’s GPU lineup.
According to the post, it would seem that the thermal design power (TDP) of the chip would be at 100 watts. It also reportedly performs quite well with most e-Sports games surpassing 100FPS, in many cases. For more demanding titles such as The Division and Rise of the Tomb Raider, the card can apparently maintain a comfortable 40FPS even at 1900x1200 resolution.
This is a huge leap from Intel’s previous CPU integrated graphics units, none of which come even close to providing this kind of performance. Granted, it’s nothing close to what some of NVidia’s top GPUs can offer, but the chip is not exactly intended for top-end desktop users.
While more details are necessary to draw up any kind of solid conclusions, it’s likely that the i7-8809G is aimed at budget consumers. If so, the specs revealed so far seem impressive enough.
