Facebook has relaunched the Instagram Lite app about three years since it originally went live. As suggested by the “Lite” in its name, this small-sized app comes with a few compromises aimed at users with no access to fast internet connections and high-end smartphones.
Instagram Lite: What NOT to expect from the 2MB alternative
One of the main differences between the Instagram Lite and the main app is its download size. The newly relaunched program only requires 2 MB of free storage, while the main app will need at least 30 MB to be installed. The smaller file size was made possible by removing some features.
In a blog post, Facebook also explained that the Instagram Lite developers had utilized a mechanism similar to Facebook Lite. It involves “offloading into the cloud much of the code from the app running on the phone.”
Some of the features confirmed not included in Instagram Lite include the cube transition users see when scanning through Instagram Stories. Developers have also simplified some of the assets, like replacing the trash can icon with a simple X mark.
The TikTok-like feature Reels that lets users post 15-second videos is also not carried over to the Instagram Lite. Advertisements are not present in the streamlined app as well, so it makes that it also lacks the in-app shopping function. AR filters are also missing from the 2MB app, but its users can still customize their posts with GIFs and stickers.
While some of these, especially the AR filters, seems like a major downgrade, the good thing is Instagram Lite still has the core features from the main app. It is still an ample way to enjoy the social media platform as it lets users post Instagram Stories, send messages through Direct, and share videos and photos.
Instagram Lite availability and what to expect in the future
In the same blog post, Facebook confirmed that Instagram Lite users had requested a Dark Mode, so it is one thing that is likely to be added in the future update. As many would expect, advertisements are also reportedly in the docket.
Right now, the Instagram Lite is available in 170 countries, but Facebook confirmed there are plans to launch the app worldwide. The app is now available on Android through Google Play Store, but it remains to be seen if it would also be released for iOS users.
