‘Inferno’ is scheduled to be released on IMAX on October 2016. Tom Hanks is set to return as professor Robert Langdon and reunites with director Ron Howard for the third time in the ‘The Da Vinci Code’ sequel.
According to Variety, Sony Pictures Entertainment together with Imax Corp. and Imagine Entertainment are bringing Howard’s upcoming sequel to IMAX. It will be released in IMAX theaters worldwide coinciding with the film’s release date for October 18, 2016.
The film reunites Howard with leading actor Tom Hanks for the third time following collaboration on preceding films ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels and Demons’ released in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Hanks adapted Dan Brown’s lead protagonist Robert Langdon on the big screen and returned to reprise his role for the sequel.
Howard’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’ became a box office success despite negative reviews from critics and being hounded by controversy and opposition by religious groups. According to The Numbers, the film earned $767.82 million worldwide against a production budget of $125 million. The sequel received mixed reviews from critics and earned $490.88 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million.
Robert Langdon was first introduced as professor of religious iconology and symbology at Harvard University. Although he can be strict, he is charming enough to entertain his students and is also quite open-minded. Brown described creating Robert as a fictional alter-ego of himself and the man he wished he could be.
In the third film, Robert wakes up in a hospital room in Florence, Italy with no memory of events that transpired beforehand. He finds himself as an assassination target and must work to free himself as well as regain his memories. He teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks as they race against time to stop a terrifying global plot.
According to ComingSoon.net, president of Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Rory Bruer expressed his enthusiasm over the third film in the mystery-thriller series. He said, “We’ve had an extraordinary response to the film from audiences – it’s testing extremely well. Ron Howard has made Inferno the most visually stylistic film in the series so far, with intense action sequences and cryptic dream sequences that will have audiences wanting to experience this film in IMAX.”
Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment Greg Foster added, “Together with our friends and colleagues at Sony, we are excited to continue that legacy with Dan Brown’s latest franchise installment Inferno, which is sure to thrill audiences when it launches this fall in IMAX theatres worldwide.”
‘Inferno’ is an upcoming mystery and science-fiction film scheduled to be released on October 28, 2016. It is directed by Ron Howard with a screenplay adapted for the big-screen prepared by David Koepp. It stars Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan, and Omar Sy among others.
