Huawei has officially expanded its reach in the foldable smartphone market with the announcement of the Huawei P50 Pocket this week. As told in previous leaks, the new device is the company’s first clamshell-type foldable phone with some design elements similar to the Huawei P50 series.
A dedicated launch event for the Huawei P50 Pocket was held on Thursday in China, but tech fans can watch its replay through the company’s official YouTube channel. Some of the core technical specifications announced during the event include the device’s use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset.
The SoC’s clock speed is up to 2.84GHz, which is similar to the Snapdragon 888 chip used on other premium phones released in 2021. However, due to the existing trade bans from the United States government, Qualcomm can only supply Huawei with the 4G version of Snapdragon 888 for the P50 Pocket.
Other than that, the Huawei P50 Pocket has the right specs to be considered a premium phone. It is available in 8GB/12GB RAM and 128GB/512GB storage configurations. Its main display is a 6.9-inch FHD+ OLED screen, while its 4000mAh battery supports up to 40W fast charging with Huawei’s SuperCharge technology.
The sanctions have also prevented Huawei from selling phones with Google Mobile Services, which means the Huawei P50 Pocket does not have Android 12 or even access to the Play Store. But the device is running on Harmony OS 2.
One of the most interesting details about the Huawei P50 Pocket design is its secondary screen. While smaller than the cover display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, P50 Pocket’s 1.04-inch round OLED screen is capable of many things. It can be used for taking selfies or for the facial recognition function. Users can also navigate a number of apps while the device is folded through the cover display, including music playback, message notifications, calendar, and weather alerts.
After the Huawei P50 Pocket was revealed, it made more sense why the foldable smartphone was named after the company’s latest flagship series, P50. The device features two rings, just like the P50 phones, that house the cover display and the triple camera array (40MP + 13MP + 32MP). So when folded, it looks just like a pocket-sized P50.
The Huawei P50 Pocket was made available immediately in China after its launch, starting at CNY 8,988 (~$1,411). But it is still uncertain if the device would have a global release.
