There have been reports that Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions’ next project will be released on Xbox consoles and possibly on Xbox Game Pass. And the famous video game creator recently confirmed that the studio is working on two unannounced games.
Kojima is one of the 127 game creators featured in a year-end issue of Famitsu, where the developers provide some insights into their upcoming projects and what they hope to achieve in 2022. As for the “Death Stranding” director, Kojima revealed that his studio is currently developing two games.
He did not provide specifics about the projects, but Kojima reportedly described one of them as a “big” title while calling the other a “new, challenging” game. Siliconera noted that Kojima particularly used the word “new” to describe the latter, leading to speculations that it could be an all-new franchise.
Video game leaker Jeff Grubb reported on VentureBeat in July that Kojima and Xbox have already signed a letter of intent for a publishing agreement of an unannounced game for Microsoft’s video game division. A letter of intent is, technically, not a binding document like a contract, which would explain why both parties have yet to make any indications about the rumored game. But Grubb also noted at the time that Microsoft was confident the deal would move forward and has already made arrangements and has been preparing for Kojima Productions’ development.
Not much has been reported about the rumored Xbox game since then, but it is speculated to become available on Xbox Game Pass, especially following Kojima’s previous statements about the future of video games in the streaming space. “I think within the next few years, gaming will move on to streaming,” Kojima told BBC Newsbeat (via VGC) in 2019. “I’m very interested in the new format of game that will appear on there and that’s what I want to take on.”
The machine-translated Famitsu interview showed that Kojima’s thoughts about streaming and the entertainment industry did not change. The developer said he expects 2022 to be the year when “the entertainment industry will surely change with streaming.” Kojima said the shift in the creative form provided by streaming platforms “will have a great impact on the work itself and the business method.”
