'Hellboy' Reboot Release Date, Spoilers: Neil Marshall’s Movie Gets an R-Rating For Violence and Gore

Hellboy

“Hellboy” Reboot was officially given the R-rating by the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA). This is really no surprise because the team behind Neil Marshall’s film has always mentioned that the restricted rating applies to the third sequel of this sci-fi superhero movie.

The MPAA handed down the R-rating as it found “Hellboy” Reboot features “strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and language.” This rating is unlike the first two versions that were directed by Guillermo del Toro. These were given just the PG-13 restriction for sequences of sci-fi action, violence, and some language.

In 2017, while “Hellboy” Reboot is still in production, lead actor David Harbour explained that they are going for more mature themes this time. Apparently, they knew that their ratings will change and kids will not be able to watch it anymore.

“It goes R not for reasons of nudity," Screen Rant quoted Harbour as saying. "It goes R for a bit of gore and horror, but also a bit of just the mature aspect of it, the mature themes of it. Just that we’re dealing with complicated subjects."

Moreover, Mike Mignola, creator of the “Hellboy” character said that David Harbour's adaptation of the character is much more comic-accurate compared to how Ron Perlman portrayed the role in the first two films. Commenting on the difference between the portrayal of Perlman and Harbour as the large, red-skinned superhero with horns and tail, the character creator said, “In the del Toro films, Hellboy is kind of penned up, and kept secret, and that is not what we have here in the upcoming film. This is truer to the comic, in that Hellboy’s been out in the world.”

Mike Mignola added, "He’s not a top-secret, hidden away guy. He’s an out-there-in-the-world, functioning, working adult. So you’ve got that working stiff, been there, done that vibe with Harbour, that you just couldn’t have with Ron because it was played so differently.”

“Hellboy” Reboot will also star Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Hellboy’s adoptive father, Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen, the villain, Sasha Lane (Alice Monaghan), Penelope Mitchell (Ganeida), Daniel Dae Kim (Major Ben Daimio) and Thomas Haden Church (Lobster Johnson). Neil Marshall directs and written by Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden.

“Hellboy” Reboot is set to be released on April 12.
