‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 will pick up immediately after the events of its predecessor as teased by actress Caterina Scorsone. She also revealed that the incoming season will focus more on the original cast members including Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers. It was speculated that Sandra Oh’s Christina may make a surprise comeback.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress Caterina Scorsone revealed that the incoming season will pick up immediately after the events of season 12’s finale. Scorsone said, "Immediately on the tail of Amelia and Owen's wedding, there's a big explosive drama that's happening right away… On Grey's Anatomy it could be a literal explosion, but in this case, it's emotionally explosive. It's going to be a key story this year that a lot of people are going to be interested in."
Season 12’s final episode, entitled “Family Affair”, saw Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) finally tying the knot. Meanwhile, Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) fight over Jo not wanting to marry him, which results in Alex beating Andrew (Giacomo Giannotti) up for a misunderstanding.
Scorsone also hinted that season 13 will put more focus on the series’ original cast members. She said, "There is going to be a lot of checking in with the original cast; we love them so much and there has been such a renaissance with the show that it's nice to focus on the core pieces that have been there since the very beginning."
Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have already renewed their contracts with ABC. They play original characters Meredith, Alex, Miranda and Richard respectively.
The series has undergone multiple cast changes since its premiere on ABC on March 2005. Season 1’s original cast included Sandra Oh as Christina, Katherine Heigl as Izzie, T.R. Knight as George, Isaiah Washington as Preston, and Patrick Dempsey as Derek.
It was speculated that Oh may be reprising her role as Dr. Christina Yang in the incoming season, according to Unreality TV. Producer and actress Debbie Allen shared a teaser of her script for the first episode on Instagram, which may have hinted at Christina’s reappearance on the show. It was captioned, “Can’t wait to share [Greys Anatomy] Season 13, episode 1 with you! Sit tight!”
It was revealed that episode 1 will be entitled “Undo” and fans were quick to speculate that it would be a clue to Christina returning and “undoing” Owen’s marriage to Amelia.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is a long-running and critically-acclaimed medical drama television series created by Shonda Rhimes. Since its premiere on ABC on 2005, it went on to become one of television’s highest-rated dramas in the 18-49 demographic.
Season 13 is scheduled to premiere on the network on September 22, 2016.
