While all eyes are on the new AAA games launching this month, including “Horizon Forbidden West” and “Elden Ring,” video game fans might be seeing another major announcement for a remastered version of a popular title. An HD release of the “GoldenEye 007” has been in the rumor mill for a while now, and the latest report suggests it could be announced in just a matter of weeks.

The new report comes from renowned video games industry insider Jeff Grubb, who said during an episode of his GrubbSnax podcast on Giant Bomb that the game’s Xbox announcement is imminent. Grubb noted that the remastered “GoldenEye 007” could be announced by Microsoft first and he suspects that the game “is probably coming pretty soon.” And by that, he meant as soon as the “next couple of weeks.”

Rare, the developer of the original “GoldenEye 007,” and Microsoft have yet to make any indications to confirm the project. However, VGC also reported that the information Grubb provided was corroborated by its source. This is also not the first time the Xbox port has been leaked. In early January, the supposed achievements list for the game on Xbox had leaked with 55 items for a total of 1,000 Gamerscore.

Many video game fans might not know it, but “GoldenEye 007” was a very popular first-person shooter exclusively released on Nintendo 64 in 1997. The game was regarded as one of the first titles to prove that first-person shooters can be successful and fun to play on home consoles, too.

“GoldenEye 007” was hailed as having pioneered several gaming elements to console platforms and the first-person genre. Decades after its release, Now Gamer even regarded Rare as the developer that had “invented stealth gaming,” which was a significant undertaking, especially for a first-person shooter in the ‘90s. All this prestige and praise the game has received over the past decades should tell fans why its rumored remastered release is making headlines these days.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Rare was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and has since released titles for the Xbox 360 and the popular “Sea of Thieves” for Xbox One. It should not be surprising if the remastered “GoldenEye 007” would be exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S as well.
