Global Geopolitical Series: Saudi Arabia takes up steps to detach Qatar from Arabian Peninsula

As the diplomatic rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates led Gulf Cooperation Council and Qatar shows no signs of abating, Saudi Arabia is preparing to detach Qatar from the Arabian Peninsula permanently by digging a canal along the only land border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The diplomatic rift began almost a year ago when countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) led by Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt severed economic and diplomatic ties with Qatar in response to the latter’s closeness with Iran and accused Qatar of supporting extremists in the region.

Saudi Arabia has set a deadline for bids to dig the canal between it and Qatar as 25th June. According to reports, several foreign companies have joined the bid and the winner is likely to get announced in 90 days. The 60-km long canal will stretch from Salwa to Khor al-Adeed and will be 200meter in width and 15-20 meter deep so that Ships up to 33 meters width and 295 meters in length will be able to navigate the canal. The canal will reportedly be fully within the Saudi side of the border, so Qatar will have no waterway rights to it, and is said to be paid for entirely by Saudi and Emirati private investors.
