Global Geopolitical Series: Key updates from across the world

Here are some key events to keep a tab on,

  • Russia-U.S. - Syria: Russian military chief has arrived in Israel to discuss Israel’s issue with Iranian military presence in Syria.    
     
  • Korean Peninsula: Both North Korea and the United States hailed the last week’s historic summit between North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un and the U.S. President Donald Trump. President Trump promised to halt the war games in exchange for Kim’s commitment to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.  
     
  • Palestine - Israel: Palestinian Authority Security Forces broke up protests in Ramallah on last week, after a week of rare public displays of opposition to the Palestinian leadership. Demonstrators called for an end to sanctions on the Gaza Strip, blaming PA President Mahmoud Abbas and the PA for its role in isolating the Hamas-run enclave.   
     
  • Turkey-Israel-United States: Turkey and the United States would sit together in July to resolve their differences and improve the relations between the two countries, which has bottomed to multi-decade low over U.S. move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
     
  • Italy election: Italian government is at loggerheads with Brussels over immigration. The newly formed government has toughed border security and has closed its port to several migrant ships.  
     
  • Trade war: In response to President Trump’s announcement of tariffs on $50 billion Chinese goods, China has announced that it would also impose tariffs on U.S. imports worth $50 billion. The first trace of Chinese tariffs on $34 billion U.S. goods would go live on July 6th.
