Gay Water, a new canned vodka cocktail, has launched with a bold mission to empower the LGBTQIA community and redefine the term "gay." The brand's debut follows recent controversy surrounding TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney's association with Bud Light.
Moreover, the founder of Gay Water said that by introducing the canned cocktail, they also want to remove the disgraceful characterization of the word "gay." The company pointed out that the term's original meaning is "happy," but unfortunately, the perception of the word has changed over the years.
It now has a negative connotation as people started using it as a disparaging label for people and their actions. The company is looking to recover what the word stands for by making it visible in stores, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and people's homes where everyone can see it.
As per CNN Business, the maker of the new RTD cocktail brand chose to name the product "Gay Water" because it is a phrase used to refer to a popular mixed drink of vodka and soda that is commonly ordered at bars by the gay community.
Spencer Hoddeson founded the company that made the Gay Water drink. He is a known queer influencer who also worked for Yahoo as the head of corporate social. He shared that he first thought of creating the product a year ago while vacationing with a friend working in the beverage sector.
"There has been a distinct lack of LGBTQ+ representation in the alcohol industry, but Gay Water aims to change this," the CEO of Gay Water said in a press release. "As a company, we are focused on creating positive change in the industry through our work with vendors and employees that share our values. We want to create a brand that sparks joy every time you see and taste it."
Finally, Gay Water is available in four flavors - watermelon, peach, lime, and grapefruit. It can be purchased for $18.25 (6-pack single flavored package) and $36.50 for 12 cans. The company said it will add more flavors in the coming months.
